In June 1813, Captain James Lawrence gave that order from a stretcher aboard the Chesapeake and didn't survive to see it carried out. Two months later, Oliver Hazard Perry flew those words on his battle flag over Lake Erie and won a victory that changed the course of the War of 1812. Lawrence understood that what you surrender under pressure becomes your adversary's advantage. Perry immortalized it, and the principle has outlasted both of them.
